So, What Was Inside the Curiosity Cube?

Early this morning Peter Molyneux, the big head honcho behind games like Populous, Fable, and Curiosity, sent out this tweet.

Soon after we were treated to this one.

Alongside the cube are encouraging messages saying “Planet Earth, you can do this.” and “Remember the cube, only your word can keep it alive.”

So with that, Curiosity is drawing to a close. If you are unfamiliar with the game here is the rundown. Curiosity is an iOS and Android game where you are teamed with everyone else in the world in your goal of clearing away a gigantic cube. There are thousands of smaller blocks on every face of the cube and you have to tap each one to clear it away. You can clear it in whatever fashion you want, be it a grid pattern, or something a little more phallic. Peter Molyneux has said that “what is inside the cube is life-changingly amazing by any definition.” So after some initial hiccups, the game was set off around 7 months ago for bored people all around the world to clear away.

So, what was inside the Curiosity Cube? Well, we still do not know. The cube is being cleared away as we speak and we might have an answer within an hour or so. As soon as we know, so will you. Of course, there is always the chance that nobody is going to release the “life changing secret” and that we will all be left wondering. And what happens to the game once the cube is cleared? Maybe you have an idea? Let us know in the comments.

[UPDATE] So as it just closed out we got these tweets from Peter.

For those of us that did not win, here is what the cube held, twitter. We are currently waiting on the winner to see if they will actually share the “secret” with the community, or if they will keep it for themselves.

[UPDATE 2] This is what was inside the cube the whole time –

The winner was Bryan Henderson from Edinburgh and was contacted directly by the 22Cans team to see if they would share the “secret inside.”

The basic rundown is that the winner is going to be an intrinsic part of 22Can’s upcoming game Godus, in that he will be the god of the game. He will reign over the rest of the players and “decide on the rules that the game is played by” whatever that means. The winner will also receive a small portion of the profits, which is life changing, if the game does well.

Was this a “life changing” secret? Was it worth all the time spent tapping? What does it even mean to be a god in a game that is populated by actual players? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  • To me this is groundbreaking. To involve the gaming community directly in your game and even profits is very cool. Peter Molyneux has always tried to be innovative and forward thinking. This is one of the cooler things ever done in the gaming world.
