No UMD Passport Program For North America, yet

Written by Chris Lock

Alongside the release of the Japanese Playstation Vita the UMD Passport program was released as well. What this allowed you to do was transfer every game you owned on a UMD to your Vita, for a small fee. This seemed like a great way to keep some semblance of backward compatibility from a failed proprietary format. It was also a great way to make sure that your games were always with you and linked to your account for future play. Well turns out none of that is happening in North America.

Sony told Kotaku that this program would not be making it’s way overseas. As of this writing no explanation was given as to why we would not see the program. Seeing as how the Vita is a second attempt at an all digital game console the UMD Passport program seemed like a good way to get people on board without destroying their wallets. Hopefully, if this remains an exclusive to the west, Sony will update the PSN with all the PSP games and not just a select few. I for one would love to see Bounty Hounds and Gutaroo Man on the store.

What are your thoughts on this? What games would you need to have on PSN if the Passport program never makes it to North America? Let us know in the comments.
