If Syndicate and Baldur’s Gate had a big love-in, It would probably look and play like Krater.

I got a question for you good sir! Do you like post apocalyptic settings and environments? Do you like yourself some top-down action RPG action with dungeon crawling ass kicking sprinkled in like the icing sugar on a pile of damn delicious pancakes? Do you love playing games on the PC, but despise the sun!? Well you happen to be in luck because this summah, you will be able to get your hands on some Swedish flavor with Krater, a game made by Fatshark,  and it is apparent the Stockholm based company draws on some big influences.

From a graphical perspective, Krater is reminiscent of the old Fallout games. The environments, while post apocalyptic in tone, are given a lush and nordic forest-infused aesthetic that look quite nice, even at the Alpha stage when the screenshots below were taken. Gameplay wise, this game has been described as having ” combat mechanics of action-RPGs with top-down tactics of classic old-school dungeon crawlers”. Seeing this game in action, it looks very similar to games such as Balder’s Gate, with a bit of Syndicate (old ass Syndicate, not new FPS ass Syndicate). One of the main goals of this game is to gather a team of “Free Diggers” and explore a massive crater, which is believed to house some old technologies, and even some civilizations, still remaining after the world experienced a massive explosion from a terrible war. The big feature of this game is the crafting system that is put into place. You will gather loot and according to the Fatshark dudes, will be able to craft anything you want/need using your findings to help you and your crew along the way. It certainly looks extensive, and it will be interesting what some of the more creative types out there will be able to create (Kreate?).

Speaking of your crew, you will need to go out and recruit a few good men to round out your excavation team. You control a group of 3 characters, with 4 main classes that will be available with a variety of specializations that contain persistent leveling abilities. You will need to make sure your boys are well equipped, because the monsters that you will encounter on your journey love to inflict a little bit of perma-death to your team, with you needing to recruit along the way should one of your squadmates buy the farm. No word yet if you are able to raid your dead for equipment to give to others or to sell, let us hope that is the case.

This game does seem quite interesting indeed, and I hope it does get a little bit of love when it comes out. Also Fatshark is running a contest where you can actually name some of the in game weapons, check out this link for more info.

Krater will be released on Steam June 12 with retail copies being available in the following countries and dates

U.K. and Ireland: August 17 2012

Austria, Germany, and Switzerland: August 31 2012

  • I hope it doesn’t get lost in Diablo III….

This looks fun though, and I loved my some Balder’s Gate: Dark Alliance, back on the PS2.

  • Ooooooh man. This could either be incredible, or the biggest crushing disappointment since the last….big crushing disappointment.

    Here’s hoping it’s amazing!
