Gwent – The Witcher 3’s Curiously Addictive Card Mini-Game

Written by James T. George

Most large-scale open-world games seem to have a plethora of mini-games to choose from. Be it Pazaak from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Five Finger Filet from Red Dead Redemption, or Bowling with cousin Roman in GTA IV, there’s plenty to distract players from endless lists of missions. Players of the recently released Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will have no doubt by now played a few rounds of Gwent, the expansive card game held within.

Gwent positions the player as a general on a battlefield, commanding three classes of units against another. The player can collect new cards and customize their card deck throughout the game, all while combating other NPC’s. Rafał Jaki and Damien Monnier from CD Projekt Red came together to present a tutorial about the game.

I’ve only just begun my trip through the Witcher 3’s story, and have already played a few rounds of Gwent along the way. The tutorial has me very interested in getting back into a tavern and playing a few more rounds. I would love to see some sort of Gwent game available on mobile devices in the future, perhaps even syncing with your Witcher 3 game save, allowing you to carry your deck with you everywhere.

What about you? Are you more likely to spend time playing Gwent after checking out that tutorial? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned LevelSave.com for our official Witcher 3 Review, which will be available soon!
