From the Ashes of Big Huge Games comes Epic Baltimore

Written by Barry Villatoro

I’m sure many of you have heard about the tragedy that befell the 38 Studios and Big Huge Games the past couple weeks. If you haven’t here’s a recap: every employee of Big Huge Games and 38 Studios the developers of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning were laid off. The exact details are not known and frankly don’t matter. The employees worked up until the day they walked into work to be notified that they no longer have a job. As much fun as the video game industry can be, it apparently can also be brutal. They created a fantastic and successful game only to be laid off.  Now for the good news…

Quickly after the news that these studios were closed a Google Doc was created and circulated through the internet. People from all corners of the industry added jobs with open positions to this document. Every job in the industry you could think of was added to it. This by itself is pretty amazing.  Now for some even better news…

Recently Epic Games President, Dr. Michael Capps made a post in the Epic Games Community. Epic Games had been discussing about starting even more projects then they’re currently working on. In order to do so, they would need a large group of high-end talent. Where would they find a large and talented group of people with nothing to do? That same morning they were contacted by Big Huge Games. BHG wanted to use and Epic IP in order to get a game going in hopes of securing some funding in order for them to continue working and now in the words of Dr. Michael Capps:

So now we’re planning to start an impossible studio in Baltimore.

Instead of giving them an IP to work with, Epic is giving them a studio.

/clap Epic.
