First of all, I’d like to let you, the reader, know that I review this game from a kid’s point of view. It’s obviously a child’s game and don’t want to judge it for being anything but. Now with that being said, on to the review.
Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked involves you following the dance moves of the Chipmunks on the screen as well as singing along the song you have chosen. The dance are very simple to follow, allowing even some of the youngest kids chance to play and get a high score without being overwhelmed. Each correct dance move performed builds up the players “Munk Power.” After your Munk Power is filled, the screen cuts away to a flurry of lights and colors with a sillohuete of the player being portrayed on screen. During this time the played is encouraged to go crazy basically. This is where myself and my assistant, a friend’s seven year-old daughter, had the most fun.
Now, as I mentioned above I played this game with a friend’s young daughter, to basically get a better gauge of how kids would react to this game. First off, when playing co-op. Only one of us was able to play at a time. So I would start off first dancing and singing and then halfway through the song, the game tells you to trade places with your partner. That’s not very co-oppy. Not different at all from just taking turns. But, I don’t believe, we’ll call her Rachel, seemed to care one bit.
Now with the singing aspect of the game the words just scroll across the top through a highlighted section. You sing the words that are currently in the section for points. Although I basically stopped singing because it didn’t seem to make a difference one way or the other. That or maybe my awesome dancing just made up for my failure to sing. Either way, I got 5 stars on almost every song my first time through.
When you first start the game you greeted with a questionnaire. This questionnaire helps to decide which chipmunk you are, more or less. It basically decides which chipmunk to place in the middle of the screen. This is the chipmunk whose dance moves you’ll follow and which chipmunk you’ll unlock items for. My wife answered the questionnaire and was told she was most like the chubby female chipmunk in which she replied, ” I’m the fat one! The fat ooooonnneeee!” I got Alvin of course, booyah!
As you progress throughout the game, you’ll unlock stages, more songs and of course what you want most, items to customize your chipmunk. Ok, maybe now exactly what you want, but Rachel was so excited to start dressing up her chipmunk.
On top of that fact that your child may love it, here’s something for you parent that love some achievements. They’re very easy to obtain in this game, very easy. In fact after playing through my first song I was greeted with 500 cheevos, nom.
After all is said and done I would say this is a “good” Kinect game to play with your son/daughter. Also if your child happens to enjoy the Chipmunks then I would definitely suggest checking it out.
