Get Your Alice: Otherlands News Straight

Written by Barry Villatoro

Spicy Horse, the creators of American McGee’s Alice series, announced recently that Alice: Otherlands has a Kickstarter project going. Many fans of the Alice series, like myself, got super excited for another Alice game only to have our hearts broken. The Alice Kickstarter is not for another Alice game. It’s a project that is raising money so that Spicy Horse can buy the American McGee’s Alice film rights. The idea is to show EA that there is interest in the series. If they can get a short film funded by the fans, then obviously there’s interest in the American McGee’s Alice universe.

Alice: Otherlands is in no way a replacement for a third Alice game. This has me very happy, as I really enjoyed Alice: Madness Returns. What Alice: Otherlands is though, is a peak into the final episode of the current Alice trilogy. As American McGee stated is a recent Reddit AMA when asked if the short film meant an end to the Alice games,

Doesn’t have to mean that at all. Otherlands is the end of a trilogy, but we could always go back in time. There’s a period in Alice past where she was in the asylum for some years – something could be done there. The main thing is, we’d have to ask ourselves if we really want a new game so much that we threaten to mess up a nicely balanced and complete story.

I think we’ll just have to wait and see. I don’t really plan the larger elements of the franchise very far in advance. It’s not as much fun for me that way ;)

I know, he says that Alice: Otherlands is the end of the trilogy, but later he clarifies by saying the short film will take you into some of the greatest minds during the time of the Alice trilogy,

The animations would not “finish” the trilogy. They would simply provide a peek into the minds that Alice would visit in the game. Keep in mind that the animations won’t have an over arching story or interactive element to them. They will be vacations of the mind – beautiful, sometimes dark journeys through the subconscious – but without a larger resolution.

I’m excited for both, a short film and a new game.
