The Steamfeed: Of Death and Dogs

Written by Raven Poplar

This week has seen the release of some eagerly anticipated blockbuster games. I’m honestly not sure which game I want to get, Darksiders II or Sleeping Dogs. There are also lots of other games besides, and quite a few of them are strategy games. So let’s get into it.

Hero Academy

This cutesy tactical game has also been released on iOS and makes full use of its cross-platform status. This means that you can play this turn based game on Steam with iOS users and vice-versa. Also, TF2 gear is to be had!

Enter a world of swords and magic, and challenge friends old and new to a contest of tactics and skill. From the human Council to the mysterious Dark Elves, every team needs a fearless captain to lead them to victory. Only those that leverage their team’s strengths and capitalize on their opponent’s weaknesses will protect their crystal and win the day. The Academy extends a warm welcome to all – whether they’re already heroes, or simply heroes in training!

Legends of Pegasus

A 4X strategy game wherein you take control of a fleet of space ships and colonize the Known Universe.. And beyond. 4X games have started garnering a reputation for being incredibly buggy and Pegasus is no exception, let’s hope patching can fix the problems quickly.

Save mankind in a massive, 40 hour single player campaign! Fight multiplayer battles against up to seven opponents via internet or local area network! The spectacular 3D graphics don’t just bring life to marvelous planets, but also to the stunning spaceships you can freely design thanks to an intuitive ship editor.

Iron Brigade

Double Fine strikes again with this release. Iron Brigade is a tower defence and mech combat game which boasts high trench customization. I just hope the mech is easier to control than the ones in MechWarrior.

After defeating the monovision threat across Europe, Africa, and The Pacific, continue your service in the mobile trenches with Iron Brigade: Rise of the Martian Bear. Face Vlad’s most horrific new Monovision Constructs in a brand new Martian Campaign. Unlock over 80 new pieces of loot to battle the Tubes in 4 defense missions, 2 survival missions, and an all new Boss mission!

Darksiders II

Our own Barry Villatoro will be reviewing this game very soon, so keep your eyes peeled for his write-up. This game is apparently a departure from the first Darksiders game with colourful environments and likable characters.

Awakened by the End of Days, Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen, embarks upon a quest to restore mankind, and redeem his brother’s name. Along the way, the Horseman discovers that there are far worse things than an earthly Apocalypse, and that an ancient grudge may threaten all of Creation . . .

Sleeping Dogs

This Hong Kong mob-based action adventure was one of the most exciting games of E3. In it you will find yourself up against some of China’s biggest and baddest urban gangsters in a bid to clean the streets.

In this open world game, you play the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop trying to take down the Triads from the inside out. You’ll have to prove yourself worthy as you fight your way up the organization, taking part in brutal criminal activities without blowing your cover. Torn between your loyalty to the badge and a criminal code of honor, you will risk everything as the lines between truth, loyalty and justice become permanently blurred.

Galactic Civilizations I: Ultimate Edition

Another 4X strategy game, though this is a time- and battle-tested product by Stardock Entertainment. Originally released in 2003, this title has been lauded as among the premier 4X games.

The year is 2178, the Terran Alliance has invented a new technology — Hyperdrive. But the secret has leaked to the other civilizations starting a race for all the inhabitable worlds in the galaxy! As leader of United Earth, you must research new technologies, build an economy, create a powerful military force, all the while carefully balancing your political, diplomatic and trade skills.

Cladun X2

This Legend of Zelda look-a-like boasts some of the most highly detailed character customization in the top-down hack n’ slash RPG genre.

Cladun X2 is a hack n’ slash dungeon crawler with a retro RPG finish and a nearly infinite level of character customization. From stats to equipment to character classes to creating your own hero, Cladun X2 promises an addicting experience that gamers new and old will fully enjoy.

Tower Wars

Here we find a wonderfully pretty hex-based tower defence game which obviously pays homage old tabletop miniatures games like BattleTech and WarHammer.

Tower Wars is a new and unique spin on the competitive multi-player tower defense genre! The game combines elements of tower defense, real-time strategy, and all-out multi-player mayhem to bring you a completely unique experience, delivered with a fun and funny not-so-old world style!

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack

It seems there is a new action/adventure sidecrolling 2D puzzle/platformer being released every week. This one looks like a lot of fast-paced fun as you try to careen a blob though various lasers and other obstacles in order to decimate human-kind.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is a side-scrolling puzzle-platformer about a grumpy mutant Blob that escapes into the world and starts eating everything around him. A follow-up to the Platformer Tales from Space: About a Blob, Mutant Blobs Attack features new levels, new powers and controls, and a new Blob player character.

Check VS. Mate

This title was originally released as Battle VS. Chess and was subsequently removed from the Steam library. It has been re-released as Check VS. Mate here in the American market, though it retains it’s original title in the UK. Was the name too close to Battle Chess, a game with obvious parallels, for our delicate American sensibilities?

Commanders, assemble your armies! CHECK VS. MATE calls for an interactive feather duster, chartering the successful chess game principle into the present day multi-media world. Animated fantasy figurines assemble in magical worlds and await your command! As a Commander, execute skillful maneuvers on the game board and catapult yourself directly into the battle with devastating attacks, chessman vs. chessman.

And that’s it for this week. If you’re on the fence about any of them, stay locked to Levelsave.com in the coming weeks for any reviews we may have for you. Until next week, Save often!

  • If you like walking very long distances multiple times, then you’ll love Darksiders 2! Also, not the greatest port for PC, but it definitely improves on the gameplay of the first one.
