The Biggest Games Coming to the Vita from Gamescom

A few months ago I started work on an article titled “Ten Indie Games We Want On the Vita.” It was a slow and arduous process of trying out loads of indie games and contacting developers to ask them “Vita?” Some of them got back to me, other required research into old articles posts and the deep recesses of NeoGAF in an attempt to connect some dots. So why am I bothering to tell you about a failed article? Because nearly every game on that old list is now coming to the Vita.

I was nearly done with the piece right before E3 this year when Sony blew the indie doors open with easy ports, like Don’t Starve, and less likely games, like Octodad. Both of which required me to examine more indie games as I could not “want” a game on Vita if it was already coming to the system. But Sony just would not stop; with games like Hotline Miami, DiveKick, and even Farming Simulator. Nearly every game I wanted to see was promptly announced while I salivated all over the OLED Vita screen and despaired over my dying article. Then at Gamescom this year they shot more games onto the system, slowly morphing it into a juggernaut of a system. So for those of you saying “Vita no has gams,” maybe take a look at the following list.

Games for Vita revealed at Gamescom –

Rogue Legacy – Nearly everyone I know who played this game said the same thing. “This would be perfect on the Vita.” It is because of this that I never actually played Rogue Legacy and was betting on the eventual Vita port. My bet payed off.

Fez – Austin was in romantic love with this game. Having it on the Vita makes the experience even that much sweeter.

Hotline Miami 2 – Both Matt and I sing highly of the original Hotline Miami. Matt even went so far as to review it on Vita. It is no surprise that the sequel is making its way to Vita, but is it nevertheless exciting.

Borderlands 2 – Excuse me while I just eject myself from life for.. well for forever. I love RPGs but I find it too difficult to tether myself to my TV these days. I have a family and they want to watch TV and make me go places, like the dreaded outside. With Borderlands 2 on Vita I can max out my characters while more easily pretending to not ignore my family. The game will also still have 4 player co-op, so I can convince more people to ignore their loved ones.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth – This game made a splash with gamers based on its controversy religious tones. Sadly I never found time to sink my teeth into Isaac but that is going to quickly alleviated next year when Binding of Isaac comes to Playstation Network free for Playstation Plus members.

Minecraft – Notch confirmed on Twitter that Minecraft will be coming to the PS4, PS3, and Vita. Because of the PS3 and PS4 support it is pretty safe to assume that the Vita version will be the full game and not the Minecraft Mobile game, which by the way is still missing buckets. This could not come at a more opportune time as my son is just now starting to understand videogames and Minecraft is the perfect game to help bolster creativity. Minecraft on the TV, playing with the Vita, just me and my boy and life could not get any better.

Those are just some of the biggest, or most interesting to me, titles coming out. The full list is actually much, much larger. It also is worth remembering that every game available on the PS4 can be played on the Vita with Remote Play. What that means is that even if it is not specifically designed for the Vita, it can still be played on it. So that means that all these PS4 games (list taken directly from Playstation Blog) can also be enjoyed on the toilet.

  • Assault Android Cactus (Witch Beam)
  • Final Horizon (Eiconic Games)
  • Guns of Icarus Online (Muse Games)
  • N++ (Metanet)
  • Samurai Gunn (Teknopants)
  • Starbound (Chucklefish)
  • Switch Galaxy Ultra (Atomicom)
  • Velocity 2X (FuturLab)
  • Volume (Mike Bithell)
  • Wasteland Kings (Vlambeer)

If that list was not enough to excite you then first: What is wrong with you? And Second: That was just PS4 games. The confirmed Vita games is much more expansive.

  • Age of Zombies (BlitWorks/Halfbrick)
  • A-Men 2 (Bloober Team)
  • Assault Android Cactus (Witch Beam)
  • Avoid Droid (Infinite State Games)
  • Broken Sword: the Serpent’s Curse (Revolution Software)
  • Eufloria HD (Omni Systems)
  • Final Horizon (Eiconic Games)
  • Flame Over (Laughing Jackal)
  • Gravity Crash Ultra (Just Add Water)
  • Gunslugs (Abstraction Games)
  • Joe Danger 1 (Hello Games)
  • Joe Danger 2 (Hello Games)
  • Kick & Fennick (Green Hill Studios)
  • Samurai Gunn (Teknopants)
  • Supermagical (Tama Games)
  • Switch Galaxy Ultra (Atomicom)
  • Table Top Racing (Ripstone)
  • Volume (Mike Bithell)
  • Wasteland Kings (Vlambeer)

So color me excited because that is 35, count them 35 games coming to the Vita. Not all of them are new, and not all of them are going to be winners, but games like Minecraft and Borderlands 2 coming, it is very hard not to see the Vita as a must have gaming device. It may have had a rocky start but the Vita is gaining steam and girth and it is highly unlikely that this games train is slowing down. Now, if only they would drop the price a little. Oh wait, they already did.

So back to the long dead indie games article. There were just a few titles that were missing from all of these announcements. And since Sony has been making so many dreams come true already, why not throw out my wishes for Vita games.

  • Bastion
  • Papers, Please
  • FTL
  • Eve Online
  • Awesomenauts
  • Teleglitch

Those are my picks. What are yours? If you could have any game on the Vita what would it be? Let us know in the comments.

  • Borderlands 2, so sold. I would also love Bastion (which Austin never sent me a code for) and Awesomenauts as well!
