Review: Asura’s Wrath – Press R2 to Yell

Written by Barry Villatoro

This games main goal is to deliver you an experience. It does so with flying colors. Yes, you will be watching and performing quick time events a lot during this game. Also, as you watch this distinguishing work of art unfold before you, you won’t care. I found myself captured by the story and blown away by the visuals. Asura’s Wrath takes you on an epic journey that you won’t soon forget.

As you’re guided through Asura’s story, you’ll be treated to a buffet of spectacular visuals, moving musical score and more over the top moments then the entire Dragon Ball Z story put together. You’re first introduced to Asura in the midst of a mighty battle outside of Earth’s atmosphere. One that seems as if it could decide the fate of humanity and Earth. This Armageddon will be decided by the Eight Guardian Generals and the Gohma. The Eight Guardian Generals are the demigods whose role in the universe is to protect humanity and rid Earth of the Gohma. The Gohma is a race of impure beasts, ranging from ape like creatures to massive cobra-turtle hybrids and even much larger. Your introduction in Asura’s Wrath sets the precedent for the vast scale on which the game takes place. You’re shown first hand the incredible power of the demigods as well as that of the Gohma.

The story is set in motion after this battle and the subsequent betrayal of Asura. You’ll then follow Asura on his quest for vengeance as he fulfills his true role in this universe. Not only are you shown an “I’m going to yell constantly” side of Asura. You’re given quiet moments with him as well as moments that show what he’s truly fighting for, that his wrath is fueled by something more potent, love. Have you seen the movie, Gladiator?

You can almost break this game up into three sections. Third person combat, quick time events and watching. The first takes place usually once or twice each episode (there’s 18 episodes). Similar to a Devil May Cry or God of War game is how the third person combat unfolds. You’ll find yourself in a limited area with numerous enemies to dispatch. The combat itself is very basic with your light and heavy attacks with combos that are able to launch your enemies. Unlike the aforementioned games though, it’s not just a straight “beat bad dudes dead” to advance. For every successful attack you land with Asura, you build up his burst meter. Max out your burst meter and you’ll be told to “Press R2 to Burst!!!” Doing so will start a quick time event in which 9 times out of 10 have Asura annihilating the largest enemy there in epic fashion.

The quick time events in Asura’s Wrath are your standard press this button now, with some of them requiring more finesse as they become more complicated towards the end of the game. These are some of the most amazing moments of Asura’s Wrath. The scenes that take place during these moments are what set this game apart. Incredible, outstanding, over the top, amazing and impressive are all fair ways to describe these battle scenes.

Asura’s Wrath is presented as an anime, literally. In between scenes of each episode, a bumper appears in which it shows a still shot from the game with “Asura’s Wrath” in one of the corners. This would be where a commercial usually takes place, although there are no commercials in this game, obviously.

Asura’s Wrath does everything a lot of players complain about. It holds your hand as it takes you through the story. There’s a bazillion cutscenes. There’s a bazillion QTE’s. The combat is super basic. But it wraps all of that together with a nice storyline, fantastic musical score, and an over the top visually stunning experience that I fully enjoyed.

[button color=”green” link=””]Recommended[/button] Recommended : Recommended games are not held in the same esteem as those of a Must Play. A game that receives a “Recommended” is one that you certainly will enjoy playing, and our editor recommends that you do, but it may have a few problems that stop it from being the type of game you have to have right that instant.
