PSP to Vita- A Quite Possibly Costly Endeavor

Written by Chris Lock

Sony has announced that all those UMD games you bought for your PSP will be available for your Vita. On December 6th the program UMD Passport will be available to download for your PSP. While running the program with your UMD in your system the PSN will register your game so you can have it linked to your account. After that you will be able to download that game on up to two Vita systems. Sounds like an overly complicated but efficient way to keep your old games right? Well sadly there is one more catch.

None of the transfers will be free. Every game you register with your account will cost you some money which will vary in their price from about 6$ to 20$ a piece. One would hope that there would be a better way to go about “proving” you have the game but it seems this is the way Sony wants it. Not all of the games on PSP would be worth another 20$ but some would definitely be worth a small fee to have available for download. Not every game is available but Sony has stated that most of the major developers will be on the program soon. For a full list of currently available game (in Japanese) click here.

  • What a rip-off if you ask me. If I already have a PSP then why would I need to transfer it to my PS Vita? I’d just play it on my PSP and be done with it, then sell it off. Their pricing is the equivalent of trading in that PSP game, so I guess their technique to combat the “used” market is to make the customer pay what they would get in a trade-in but you’re actually paying more. I don’t see how this is a benefit. Wy to go Sony!
