NBA 2K Online: Bringing MMOs to Basketball?

Written by James Pope

2K Sports and Tencent Games have been co-developing a free-to-play basketball MMO that is now in its beta stage. While I am totally confused as to what exactly a hoops MMO is… I can tell it has something to do with sexy Asian women. With limited details and a link to a website that’s in Chinese there is little to know outside that the game is boasting multiple games modes which will all be presented utilizing the 2k basketball game engine.

Customization options include player created tournaments, players and multiplayer teams. I’m sure that this will all be tracked and ranked according to the top teams, scorers and champions. A mention of social media integration means players will most likely have the chance to easily post their accomplishments to their favorite sites.

Watching the video online sheds little light on the game outside of the fact that players will be taking control of their own self-created NBA player and progressing them throughout their career in a My Player type progression.

We’re pleased that our partnership with Tencent continues to make progress and consumers are beginning to experience our world-renowned NBA brand and signature gameplay, said David Ismailer, Chief Operating Officer at 2K. Online gaming in Asia represents one of our organization’s key, long-term strategic initiatives. We are encouraged by this opportunity to complement our core business through leveraging our proven franchise and development expertise with one of the region’s most successful online services.

  • Being a fan of the NBA 2K series, I’ll give it a try, but they’re really gonna have to give us more info.
