Everything we know about Assassin’s Creed III

Written by Barry Villatoro

Alright, so unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the third instal… er, fifth installment of the Assassin’s Creed series has been announced, Assassin’s Creed 5…., 3 I mean.

Just in case you have been living under a rock, let’s get you caught up with the basics. Assassin’s Creed III begins in the year 1775 during the Revolutionary War. You’ll assume control of a new assassin, a half British and half native american named Connor. After watching his village be destroyed, Connor joins the war, but on who’s side?

This first video goes into the basic weapons at Connor’s disposal. The first are dual pistols. How well will these pistols work for Connor, being that most pistols from the time period were inefficient and had longer load times then most games nowadays, but I am sure the Assassins have figured something out. The next two weapons are your common bow and arrow and of course, the hidden blade. Lastly we’re shown the tomahawk Connor can use, with the axe tip being very noticeably an Assassin’s symbol.

In the next video we see Connor annihilating a group of red-coats and assassinating an officer. As Connor peers over a battlefield, we hear a speech being given by whom we may or may not assume is General George Washington. Now after the release of this video as well as the release of the first gameplay trailer, commentors on YouTube and other sites expressed concern over the patriotic spin on the game. Not to mention the fact that everyone we see Connor killing is a red coat. Concerns were that AC3 would turn into a, “Merica! Kill Brittish!,” kind of game, but the developers have stated that , “This is a game about Assassins killing Templars and that Templars are on both sides of the conflict.” Now with that, it sounds like we’ll also see Connor assassinating officers on the American side.

Finally we have some gameplay which will allow us to talk more about the mechanics and some changes with Connor compared to previous assassins. Some of the following video was shown at PAX East, but the video at PAX East really focused on the newer additions to the game.

New additions include enabling the player to choose whether Connor slides under an object instead of always vaulting over them. Connor now has reactive animations, for example, we were shown Connor running through a battlefield scene. As a cannonball landed feet from Connor he automatically stopped and shielded himself from the shrapnel and flying debris. Also a new weapon, not shown in the first video, we saw at PAX  East and you see a quick glimpse of it here, the rope dart. Connor can throw a dart with a rope attached at an enemy. Once it hits, Connor can use his weight to pull an enemy into the air and out of a battle, leaving them to hang while frightening the remaining enemies.

Connor in Motion

Lastly, we were shown (and you’ll briefly see here) and told about “Connor in Motion.” Ubisoft wanted to creat a new breed of assassin when they thought of Connor. They wanted to create an assassin that was in perpetual motion. With this, Connor has the ability to assassinate multiple targets without stopping. You’ll notice at the end of the video, Connor’s real target sits on top a horse in the background. Connor won’t be able to get to him without being noticed, so what does he do? Assassinate everyone in his way, without stopping.

As with the latest Assassin’s Creed games, there will be multiplayer, but other then fact that’ll be there, not much else is known.

That’s the sum of all the Assassin’s Creed III info we have. What do you guys think? Are you excited for the next installment? What are your thoughts on the Assassin’s Creed III? Let us know in the comments!

  • I love that the setting is so very different. Much of the war took place in the open battle field. It’ll be interesting trying to sneak in the open. Tents at night? In trees? Hmm
