Activision Gets the Walking Dead (TV) License

Written by Kenny Rioux

Imagine that! Activision is making a video game. Are you sitting down? It is a game with zombies in it! And it is going to be a First Person Action game, STOP THE PRESSES! In a move that is simultaneously baffling, yet not all that surprising, Activision has divulged they are going to be working with the boys and girls over at Terminal Reality as they conjure up a game based on AMC’s successful TV show,”The Walking Dead”. Now you may be asking (presumably),”But Kenny, you brilliant and sexy stallion, isn’t there already an episodically released series of games based on that exact franchise?” The answer is (blushingly),”Yeppers!”. It is different in that this game  falls more in line with the TV show, whereas Telltale was working using the comic books as their referential material. You will assume the role of Daryl Dixon, many of you know him as the crossbow wielding redneck that also has an older brother by the name of Merle.

The crux of the story is that the two brothers are making their way to Atlanta, where it is supposedly the safest place to be after the zombie apocalypse happens. Oh and you will come across a few of the undead. Activision seemingly is making the smart decision of not just calling this a Call of Duty:The Walking Dead. Each encounter will have to be analyzed and more often than not, stealth will be your best option on staying alive with the limited supplies you have at your disposal. Along the way, you will come across NPCs, with varying personalities and motivations. These interpersonal relationships will at times become laced with friction and animosity, which could lead to events that are more deadly than the walkers themselves.

The Walking Dead video game has a 2013 release window, and will be appearing on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. And while this product is not yet rated, Mature would be a very safe bet, given the gore level of the tv show that the game is emulating. You can visit the website and watch the trailer here.

    • The FPS tag I think may be a bit of a nonstarter. Yes it is first person, but this sounds like more of a stealth title (with co-op no doubt being a feature), than anything. We’ll see what exactly this game is in 6 months time.

  • I wish someone would come out already and release a persistent online zombie horror/survival game. Like, DayZ but better.

Imagine if they created a world so big that everyone could play in the same persistent world and survive together for as long as they could. I’m talking like 500x bigger than Skyrim and every building is enterable and every object is usable. I know this is probably not even close to being possible but wouldn’t it be awesome?

    • You can have as big of a world as you want, but if it is not constantly interesting and different throughout, it won’t matter. This has been a constant conundrum with games like Oblivion, Skyrim and the like, although admittedly, Skyrim’s world was pretty awesome throughout. Kingdoms Of Amalour was a perfect example of having a big open world that didn’t have anything in it. There is something to be said for quality over quantity and at some point the value proposition scales that tip in the favor of quantity becomes almost irrelevant, because there is no way you can make a world that big and keep it fresh and most importantly focused.

      • Yeah, that is why I said it probably wouldn’t be possible. You would have to spend upwards of 20 years just creating a world like that and then you would have to get enough people playing it that the players wouldn’t just be wandering around without ever finding anyone to interact with.

It would be extremely fun, but it will never happen.
