Awesomenauts was not a game that was on my radar coming into the month, but after playing the game I have to say that I couldn’t be happier that this review fell into my lap. A side scrolling arena battle game with fun platforming elements, Awesomenauts takes simplistic rules and gameplay and mixes them with a decently deep upgrade system and encourages players to come up with their own strategies to claim victory over their opponents. Each team’s base is protected by a series of turrets and only by destroying them will players have the chance to assault the enemy base in order to secure a victory.
Using the different classes in conjunction with one another is where this game truly hits it’s stride. As of now there are 6 distinctly different classes, a cowboy who uses his blaster and dynamite for attacks, a spacefrog who’s blaster and dash attacks make him a nimble yet effective foe, a giant mech who’s HP and weapons make him a tank, a flying monkey who’s laser attack can turn the tides of battles and even a floating brain who serves as the healer and who can in my mind be the single most important character in the game.
For only $10 on PSN and XBLA, (free for PS Plus members) this game offers hours of entertainment for those who are willing to work together and take on live enemies. There is a practice mode where players can hone their skills but similarly to the tutorial, nothing can help prepare you for the frantic battles you will find online like just jumping into the fray can do.
Since both teams have the chance to use the same characters if they choose, strategy is key in securing a victory. Teams must use their skills and attributes in the most efficient ways possible to try to take down the opposing team. Most of the time a team with a healer or with a higher level character will have the advantage, but used correctly each of the characters can play a devastating role on the battle field. While the game does lack in the amount of different stages and characters to choose from it is a small gripe when you find yourself smiling from ear to ear as you go through battles again and again.
Offering a very flexible amount of options for forming teams, Awesomenauts allows full screen online play with friends and random opponents, it also allows players to jump in with a friend locally and play split screen against their foes as well. There is no single player mode, instead Awesomenauts focuses on putting players into fast paced 3 on 3 team battles and encouraging them to not only work together to find the fastest and most efficient means to destroying an enemy base but also encourages players to share their tactics and advice with others through their Facebook and Twitter feeds.
Awesomenauts is absolute must play for anyone looking to jump into a fun, frantic arena battle game. As a matter of fact… if you only have $10 to spend of gaming… Awesomenauts might be the best purchase you could make.

Wow, this game sounds awesome! If I wasn’t trying to find the money for a Vita and Minecraft XBLA I would be picking this up. Hopefully it will go on sale for 400 points sometime soon.
