ACTIVI$ON $ETTLE$ WITH INFINITY WARD DEV$

Written by Kenny Rioux

Well, that was a bit of a letdown. After 2 years of build-up and what many thought would be an epic showdown between two of the most talented developers in recent memory and the biggest publisher in the business, Activision…blinked first. Activision announced today that they settled with the outed Infinity Ward devs Jason West and Vincent Zampella, as well as the other plaintiffs seeking damages towards unpaid bonuses. The terms of the settlement are being kept strictly confidential *cue groans*. Here is what Activision had to say in a statement.

“Activision Blizzard, Inc. today announced that all parties to the litigation have reached a settlement of the dispute, the terms of which are strictly confidential. The company does not believe that the incremental one-time charges related to the settlement will result in a material impact on its GAAP or non-GAAP earnings per share outlook for the current quarter or the calendar year, due to stronger-than-expected operating performance in the current quarter.” The last part basically means “DIABLO 3 SOLD LIKE GANGBUSTERS BITCHES!!!”.

So what now? Well, basically West and Zampella presumably have enough personal capital to fund whatever Respawn Entertainment is doing, the other Infinity Ward guys that left Activision could probably retire at this point, and Activision will basically recoup whatever the amount that was paid out and Bobby Kotick will take some solace in the fact that he won’t have to pay a billion dollars of his company’s money. And they can go back to doing what every successful video game company does, milk their cash cows until they are bone dry and leave them for dead.
