War World – Don’t play War World. Try out Trenched.

INCOMING! Bam! Swooooooosh… Kapow! Explosions! Guns! War! Shit.

War World; Or as it made itself out to me: the miscarriage of A night featuring one too many drinks between a power ranger and a transformer in which both wake up, realize they’ve made a child, drop him down off at the rickety old run-down orphanage and call it a day.

If you’re looking for a great game with killer game play, an amazingly deep story, and an awesome cast of characters… Then please don’t play War Worlds. Seriously, save your money and your time. When I first started up War Worlds I was extremely pumped. It looked like an amazing XBLA title with promising abilities…until it started. The menus appeared to be made in MS Paint with the stock fonts! The characters looked like cheap knock offs of Transformers or Power Rangers. The characters looked so fake even a Chinese immigrant in time square wouldn’t be caught dead selling them.

At its core War World does in fact have a slight bit of playability in what is called Arcade Mode. This is a mode in which you play as a random robot fighting against anywhere from one to five robots in any difficulty from Very Easy to EXTREME! But after level fifteen the fun quickly dies. By that time they simply throw you into the biggest, clumsiest, most god awful robot they can find and put you up against the smallest robots in the game. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem; but in War World you’re so BIG that the little robots manage to go below your line of site when they get to close! And don’t think you can just change the difficulty to fix this, oh no, changing the difficulty only changes the amount of lives you’re given.

Presentation – While the game play in War World is lackluster, the graphics in this game are surprisingly the only somewhat decent part of it. But that shouldn’t be surprising considering the games developers were originally PC developers; an area they should have stayed if you ask me. While the graphics may be decent, that’s the only part of the presentation that isn’t a total shit storm. The menus look like they were made using Microsoft Paint text boxes and thrown into the game last minute. The sounds sound as if they were recorded using a 1950’s era microphone and then recorded with a tape player which was then put into the game. Overall, the presentation is very – to put it gently – shitty.

The story of War World is one everyone will love. Because there is none! Nope! All modes are 100% multiplayer whether your online facing real opponents or offline facing bots. Think the multiplayer online might be fun? Good luck finding out! At time of writing there was one match online, and upon joining it the host quit and the game ended. No one plays online, and for good reason.

Final Thoughts – War World’s developer Third Wave Games should definitely stick with PC games, and maybe Ubisoft – the games publisher – should have been a little more wary before helping out with this game. If you’re looking for a fun mech shooter on the cheap, don’t play War World. Try out Trenched! If you’re looking for somewhere to spend the extra 400 Microsoft points, Why not check out the Xbox Live Indie Games? Anything but War World.
