Every once in a while a developer says, “Screw it.” Where they decide to create something that they want to see happen. Double Fine Happy Action Theater is one of these moments. DFHAT took a special level of “Screw it” and I’m definitley pleased with the final product.
DFHAT is a Kinect game that turns your room into the game space or takes you and places you in the game. 18 stages of some of the most random ideas you could place into a video game.
“Hey, let’s just fill the room with balloons because well, everyone wants a room filled with balloons. Then let’s have the players pop the balloons for items they’ll never need, use or see again. Because, you know, screw it.”
“Let’s let pigeons fill their room so everyone can live out their dream of kicking pigeons, because you know, screw it.”
“Hey, let’s have a stage that takes 5 pictures of the players and they can overlap the pictures together. Because everyone wants to turn themselves into a monster, oh and also, screw it.”
The quotes above are directly from Double Fine. (Not true)
Anyways, from the moment are started this game up I was laughing out loud. I couldn’t figure out the reason for some of the stages, nor did I care. I was laughing and having an awesome time with this game. Now you’re able to go through all stages of the game in about 30 minutes. Regardless, it’s a blast. If you’re someone that loves to have people over and have a game running in the background for someone to just jump in, have fun and jump out, this game is perfect.
There’s a stage where you stuck in jello and the point is just to make the jello move, meh. But then there’s a Space Invaders style stage, a stage that turns places you as a giant, destroying a city ala Godzilla. This game forces you to dance, have snowball fights, get set on fire, all the while tempting you to moon the camera. I did it, I know I’m twelve, but whatever I couldn’t help my self.
DFHAT is $10. If you have a Kinect. You know just, “Screw it” and buy it.
