Review: Grand Theft Auto V – Beautifully Corrupt, Elegantly Perfect

Written by Austin Griffith

In the sun-soaked world of San Andreas, cash is king, and Rockstar North’s latest foray into the world of Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto V, sets out to prove this. Throughout the games twelve hour campaign, players will experience a wide variety of things that they’ve never seen before, drawing inspiration from the gameplay of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire. Let’s not waste time discussing gameplay techniques, instead, let’s get right to the point.

GTA V Gameplay Trailer 7Grand Theft Auto V is Rockstar’s most ambitious and beautiful game to date. Introducing a revolutionary new mechanic that allow players to experience the story through three different characters – Michael, a retired ex-con bank robber who’s trying his best to live a normal life with his cheating wife, deadbeat son, and promiscuous daughter; Franklin, a gangbanger tired of living in the ghetto who wants to make a name for himself through legitimate means; and Trevor, Michael’s psychotic ex-partner who runs a meth business and has been led to believe Michael is dead – by switching between the through of them whenever the player pleases. This mechanic is surprisingly fluid and fun to use and helps to truly immerse you into the corrupt world of Los Santos and Blaine County.

Experiencing the story through three different perspectives encourages you to try new ways at tackling missions, not just going in guns blazing until you get lucky enough to make it through. It also makes traversing the world that much more fun, as each character has a distinct personality that you’ll see when switching to them. Switching to Michael might reveal him relaxing in a bathing suit watching the sunrise, Trevor might be finishing up a killing rampage through the backwoods of Blaine County, and Franklin might be getting high in his Aunts apartment.

GTA V Gameplay TrailerGTA V’s San Andreas is certainly a corrupt world, but a beautiful one at that. The world is filled with stunning vistas, perfect sunsets, and amazing scenes just waiting to be found. Players will be captivated by the world that they see as they fly planes over the mountain tops and dive below the seas. Even after completing the games story over a 40 hour period, I still found myself open-jawed at the beautiful scenes unfolding before me as I explored every nook and cranny that the wonderful world of Los Santos had to offer up to me.GTA V Gameplay Trailer 3

Rockstar has truly made something that is beautiful to watch and fun to play in this installment, with gameplay being the best they’ve ever made. It feels fluid and great to play while never pulling you out of the action. A smile may never leave your face throughout the entirety of the breath-taking story, and that’s something that makes the game a true joy to play.

Grand Theft Auto V is something that every gamer should play as soon as possible, it’s well worth the time and money.

Grand Theft Auto V is out now for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, no word yet on a PC/Mac release. You can buy it on Amazon here.
