Parallax scrolling. The technique is a time old tradition in gaming. Multiple background images are layered behind one another and scroll at different speeds to give the illusion of depth. In the 8 and 16-bit era of games, this was almost ubiquitous for what was arguably the most popular genre around: platforming. You don’t see this technique used much these days, at least in the truest sense. 3D graphics and gaming engines allow more detailed and interactive...
Gears of War is a personal favorite of mine – Gears of War 2 was the first game I ever owned at launch for the Xbox 360 (with Mercenaries 2 being the only thing I owned before that.) so to say that I’m invested in the series is a bit of an understatement. My Xbox 360 is a limited edition Gears of War flavor, I own the limited edition of Gears of War 2, the Epic Edition of Gears of War 3, as well as the replica retro lancer. Overall, I think I’ve invested...
Halo’s fictional universe is vast and detailed, with stories filling in the gaps between the games and more. In the build up for the series’ next release, Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft and 343 Industries has once again taken to viral advertising to fill in more of these gaps. This time, using audio diaries and images, we are invited to join fictional reporter Benjamin Giraud as he recounts the history of Halo’s hero: The Master Chief. Join us as we examine...
It’s amazing what a small team of developers and fans can do when they truly believe in a product or idea. Never was it more apparent to me than when I was first exposed to Undead Labs and “State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition” at PAX East 2015. Having never played the 2013 release on the Xbox 360, the entire concept of the game was first shown to me right on the show floor. The enthusiastic personal walkthrough I received from an Undead Labs representative was...

Much like yesterday, the folks at Star Wars Celebration are getting another big trailer reveal. Today, it is for the highly anticipated Star Wars Battlefront, from EA/DICE. This is the third major entry in the series, but it may as well be a reboot. It’s been 10 years since the last installment, and this will be the first from EA/DICE following their pickup of the series. DICE is the developer behind the hugely popular Battlefield series, known for its huge combat...
During the opening keynote of Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California we were treated to a number of glimpses into December’s release of Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens. From droids to Stormtroopers, Skywalker twins, new faces, everyone’s favorite Wookie, and some spectacularly bad Star Wars themed dubstep, you could say we got to see quite a bit short of seeing the movie itself. Then, right at the end of the broadcast, Director J.J. Abrams...
Here it is. The second trailer for Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Unleashed, revealed during the opening Keynote of Star Wars Celebration 2015. .
Just when you thought Activision had beaten the Guitar Hero franchise to death, much like a couple of its other franchises, the rise of new consoles is a valid enough reason to bring back plastic instruments and the music game genre. With Rock Band 4 serving as some serious competition, can Guitar Hero Live differentiate itself and feel like a new experience? After being one of the first to go hands on with Guitar Hero Live in New York City, I would have to say the answer is...
