Destiny’s Public Beta Stress Test Just Crashed Xbox Live’s Party System [Update: Xbox Live is Down] [Not Anymore]

Written by Austin Griffith

*Everything is now back to normal*

Update: Xbox Live’s Core Services are now down too. Users may experience problems signing in to Xbox Live on all devices.

Bungie today opened up Earth’s Moon to players for a limited two hour window, telling players to “show our servers what war really is.”

Looks like it worked.

I experienced the crash first hand, as I was gaming on the moon with a friend when we disconnected from each other. After checking our friends lists, we were no longer able to invite each other or matchmake with others. Destiny’s public stress test has succeeded in successfully crashing Xbox Live.

The official Xbox Service page says Social and Gaming are Limited, telling us that “Xbox members, are you having trouble viewing the online state and activity of other users on your Friends list? Hang in there, we’re working to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible. Thanks for your patience during this process. Another update is coming your way in 30 minutes.”

Looks like Bungie is aware of the issue on their end, and working to correct it.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Destiny’s kickass Ghost and Limited Editions, and preorder them on your console of choice by following the links below.

  • I didn’t have any issue with PSN or Destiny during the stress test (PS4). I played the new Moon story mission (Archer’s Line) without any issue (with two other players in each case).

I did have trouble getting into any Crucible or Iron Banner matches, as it seemed nobody else was trying to play those modes. Everybody on my friend list that was on Destiny was playing the Moon story mission.

  • I played for an hour then signed out and played again about 2 hours later and could sign in fine so it must be been location specific.

I’d love if Bungie released the numbers on concurrent users. With the Xbox 360 user base being able to play without codes and their call to arms to try and break the game at 2pm I bet the number of people online was absurd.

I was signed on with my xb1 and ps4. Figured I might as well help with the stress test as much as possible.
    .
As far as the party system. Dunno bout on 360 but destiny on xb1 had a bug that basically wouldn’t allow you to use party chat unless you partied up before launching the game. I do know fireteam chat wasn’t working well but that’s destiny’s servers not Xbox live.

Having live go down due to too many users is a rare site indeed so bravo Bungie lol. They need to switch the login servers over to azure but probably can’t until Xbox 360 is no longer supported.

Right now login is running on normal servers and gaming for xb1 is azure and gaming for 360 is separate running on a non scalable (like azure) platform

    • Nothing actually prevents developers from using Azure to run servers for the 360. The only difference is that devs get a subsidized amount of Azure compute for free when developing for Xbox One. Azure is just a server farm. I’m pretty sure Titanfall on 360 is using Azure too.

      • Every game on Xbox one can use azure for free as Its part of the platform. Devs who want to use it on 360 have to pay for server time but it’s cheaper than normal dedicated servers as you only use exactly as much resources as you need at any given moment.

  • My “power of the cloud” comment was moderated out?
    Seems pretty apropos.
PS4 barely cracked during beta launch and was rock solid the whole way through with the exception of about 30 min during the Moon stress test.

  • Hmm, yeah. Had a few disconnects when playing story levels, but everything was still working fine when reconnecting.
It’s hilarious that now all of a sudden, always online is acceptable for the $0N¥ paupers and they’re betting on this game to be a PoS4 seller, yet their network goes offline for maintenance for hours on end sometimes and you can’t even play the campaign of this game without an internet connection.

  • sony n4g belibers reporting false info i see. party chat & xbl was all working for y friends & many people on my friends list… xbl is a superior service compared to downtime hacked psn

    • Why not just post PS4 is better than Xbox and be done with it. That way people don’t have to guess. Seems easier.

      • That’s not what he’s saying at all. His comment has absolutely nothing to do with Sony.

He’s theorizing that just because something on xbl went down that doesn’t mean it was destiny’s fault.

Why you gotta bring fanboy crap into it? I mean he’s wrong of course. The massive number of 360 users trying to login at the same time overloaded authentication servers as a result of Bungie plea for everyone and their mother to sign on but that aside…

Did I miss something? Are you replying to a post that was deleted or are you replying to assassyn?

        ****EDIT****

never mind I see what you were responding to.

        • I was going to say… You must not know him very well. He is anti anything xbox. He seems to be the type of person who wouldn’t own anything with the letter “X” on it, because it would remind him of how much he hates Xbox anything.

I own both and he calls me a fanboy because I lean Xbox more but still find good in both. I don’t like people who have to spread hate online to justify their purchase. Trust me. I appreciate you leaving the comment AND the Edit though.

          • I hear yah. I like commenting on stories but on most sites you immediately get attacked by Sony fanboys it makes me crazy.

Back in the day I was a Sega fanboy. One day I woke up and realized by swearing my allegiance to a plastic box I was missing out on fantastic games on a different box. I missed out on so many great SNES games.

After that moment unless a console was basically trash like say the ngage or jaguar then I’d buy it…although I own a Jaguar too lol.

There is just no reason not to own any of the modern consoles. They all have pros and cons they all have fantastic games. If you are a gamer then you game. Doesn’t matter what platform it is or what features it has or what its specs are.

            Gamers know this.

          • Very much agreed. It’s OK to have preferences, it’s NOT OK to force your opinions/preferences on people by calling them names like. “Xbot” “Pony” “Xtot” “Drones” for choosing one over the other. That segregates gamers into groups based on their supposed preferences. Plus it’s just rude and insecure. I have plenty of OLD systems both the ps4/xb1 and a PC rig. SOON a Wii U. I love playing games.

          • Wiiu is worth owning for the obvious Nintendo exclusives. Rayman is also best on wiiu because of the tablet.

I need to build myself a new PC. I’ll probably wait until February so I can justify buying an nvidia Titan with some of my tax return.

It’s kind of overkill but i don’t like upgrading my GPU every couple of Years and I figure a titan should be good for 3-4 years @ 1080p.

  • Destiny=Xbox live? Because destiny works fine. Xbox live friends list is down, thus party related functions are disabled. I highly doubt it has anything to do with destiny.

  • I had no crash during this time but I did have issues finding people to invite on one of the destiny screens. Further looked into it and was able to find my friends through XBL just not on the beta screen invite through Destiny’s software. Pretty sure the online servers are Bungie and Activision’s so I can’t imagine this to be just an XBL issue.

  • This proves if anything that XBL has more users than PSN since crashing of the system that controls friends and the party up system…well crashed. Destiny for both consoles will be a Big Hit! Do think for a moment that Activision and or Bungie take a side? They’ll make money hand over fist through sales to both consoles. It’s probably time to consider that console wars are stupid; kinda like the whole East Coast Rappers vs West Coast Rappers thing, back in the day. If that didn’t happen we’d probably still have Tupac and Biggie around playing either or both consoles. Be thankful that you have whatever console you have and are able to play these games. Nothing gained by the Gamer in the war between the consoles so stop the comparisons and just enjoy!

  • and this ladies and gentlemen is the pathetic xbox live.Even though the PSN had more users online,it didn’t crash. I hope this shows the idiots who are still stupid enough to believe in the myth that xbox live is better then PSN.

    • Take it back to the stables pony. They did this on purpose. If it wasnt for the Playstation holding back the X1 with its last gen non dedicated servers MS could have this on the Azure network working with no problems at all. Xbox live pisses on PSN… audio quality is better and its more stable. Look at you insecure ponies trying to use a test that they were trying to break the system as a evidence of it being garbage like PSN.

    • Who gives a shit man, I mean seriously do you really give a fuck which is better, I don’t understand people like you who make dumb comments for no reason, you sound like a child arguing over which system is better, FUCKING LOSER

      • Everything’s fair you asshat. Many XBot fanboys haven’t been shy coming onto forums and boasting about XBL being a better online system than PSN.

Well guess what? Micro$oft has been shitting on you fools.

Take your head out of yo ass already. Sheesh.

    • Yet when people point out the quality of chat on PSN or the amount of down time PSN has you deny it. Destiny is being run off Bungles/Activision servers me thinks.

      • DLConspiracy the closet xtot, pretends to be neutral but we all know he’s not.

          • we all know where assuming gets us… don’t we? It makes an ASS out of U and ME, tee hee… :P

          • As an owner of both consoles it is perfectly fine to acknowledge issues with a platform and not be a fanboy. He’s correct psn is down ALOT and the voice chat sounds like a 90s era cell phone meanwhile voice chat on the Xbox is VoIP quality because it is in fact Skype. Psn chat is bad enough my friends and I either use Xbox party chat or google hangouts while playing on ps4. Not a big deal.

Omg you have a complaint about a console? That must mean you hate it and are a fanboy!

          • That’s exactly how it is. Even when I know for a fact about these things because I actually am interested in the differences in both. Regardless of my preferences, there are major differences in each network. If PSN had those things I wouldn’t even mention it online because there is no need to. Sometimes it just seems to me that people online need to have EVERYTHING about their system be better than the OTHER console. Which is stupid.

          • The worst is when you talk about hardware and try to have an intelligent discussion and then someone who clearly doesn’t understand technology starts harassing you and calling you stupid. I went to school for this **** I know what I’m talking about lol.

I had one guy who was so bad I said screw it and gave him my psn username just so hr could see I owned ps3 & 4 so then he started mmessaging me on psn challenging me to come fight him in person.

He didn’t expect it when I “dox’d” him and posted his actual address in the comment thread lol.

          • lol. Oops. He went a bit far it seems. Threatening people over PSN. Really? *shakes head* I don’t mind that PS4 is more powerful than Xbox One. The thing that bothers me is that there is an overwhelming amount of nose rubbing and blind loyalty. It’s like some of these people cut themselves if something positive happens for Xbox. They turn everything in every article into a DOOM DOOM DOOM article. Be the title of the article or constant comments in the comments section. They are two different consoles and there doesn’t need to be only 1 “winner”. If it’s so much more amazing then go enjoy it and stop making people feel bad for enjoying something because it’s not as popular as the other console. Not a popularity contest. It’s a freaking game machine.

          • Best part is their argument. Last gen graphics didn’t matter (cause multiplats were generally better on 360) and xbl sucked because you had to pay to use multiplayer.

Now graphics are #1 most important and xbl sucks…just because and paying for psn multiplayer is suddenly OK.

All I care about is if the damn games are fun. Awesome on Sony for making more powerful hardware. We all know that. Who cares?

Ps4 is also more powerful than the Dreamcast but Dreamcast is still absolutely amazing.

          • Damn straight. I own my Dreamcast still. I play it all the time. That console deserved so much more than it got.

      • Destiny is running via Bungie servers but authentication to sign in is still handled via xbl and psn. Xbl has issues for some because authentication isn’t handled by azure which can scale up without anyone having to do anything. Only gameplay on xb1 runs on azure currently.

The number of 360 users trying to get on must have been absolutely staggering during Bungie load test.

        • I am not 100% sure that Destiny will be running off of AZURE. I know Titanfall is. I know COD Ghosts is. However, EA opts for their own servers for BF4 and I am curious to know if that’s what is happening with destiny even though it’s Activision who runs COD off AZURE/full dedicated on XBL and only Hybrid Servers for PS4. It’s a different developer, so it could just be on Bungies/Activisions servers. Which may be Hybrid Listen/Dedicated servers like COD Ghosts is on PS4. Only across the board. They have not completely talked about it yet.

          • From what I can gather all versions run on servers hosted by Bungie with authentication done by xbl and psn. I intercepted packets from my router and looked at them with wireshark and their block range wasn’t in a Microsoft or Sony data center once authentication was completed.

          • Hmm well that’s way more than what I did. Interesting to know. I just don’t think Bungie would go full dedicated with Xbox and not the same experience for PS4 users. They seem to want everyone to have the same experience. I think a lot of the problem is that PS4/PS3 had an ALPHA and the XB1/360 didn’t. Although I played the alpha on PS4 and it was pretty smooth. It’s been a little glitchy on the XB1 side. I am sure they will iron it out, but seems like they focused a lot more on the PS4 version.

          • Sony paid them a chunk of money for the alpha and some exclusive content but by launch they will have the issues on the Xbox version sorted out. The only one I really came across was the party chat issue.

One thing I can say was better on the xb1 version was frame stutter. Any time i was on the sparrow on ps4 and I used the boost there was some either dropped or duplicated frames that caused a momentary hitch in motion. I didn’t have that happen on Xbox but Bungie made mention of the issue and said it would be fixed.

I’m probably going to buy it on Xbox I prefer the controller and more of my friends will be on that version than ps4 but really you can’t go wrong with either of them. It would be nice if we could all just play together. I feel bad basically picking which friends to play with. I think only 1 of the 12 friends I played the beta with is getting it on ps4 and he’s one of my best friends so I’ll miss playing with him. We have been gaming together since phantasy star on Dreamcast. He owns both platforms too but seems to be leaning to destiny on ps4 for the bonus missions.

          • Yeah for me in the end it’s the people you game with the most. That instantly helps me determine what system. Even when the multiplat version isn’t the same resolution. I pick MP games on XB1, Single player for PS4 and PC can be both. Exclusives for all of them.

I did have a few chat issues with the chat snap thing, but yeah it was basically just that. A few times it made people invisible, but it usually cleared up. Other than that. It was fine.

          • That’s generally how I do it too unless I expect a big disparity between versions. I bought watch dogs on ps4 cause I assumes the visuals would be a lot better but really that game is pretty boring looking.

Resolution aside gta5 on 360 has more detail than watch dogs

          • Yeah I ended up getting WD on PC. It does look significantly better with the MOD files some users found in the coding. Which WD intentionally gimped the PC version. Didn’t take long for them to fix that. It’s still boring though you are right. I lost interest pretty quickly.

  • another fanboy made article, i think people just realize xbl servers are far more superior to psn’s. psn was down for 3 hours when the beta arrived, xbl was fine, and my party chat on 360 & one work fine..
