Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag open world gameplay – What did we just see?

Written by Barry Villatoro

Here’s the latest gameplay trailer from Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag. It features 10 minutes of the games open world. I’ll briefly go over what is shown in the newest trailer.

0:20 The trailer starts off on Andres Island. An island that is part of the Colombian Islands and that was used by the English pirate Henry Morgan as a staging ground for attacking Spanish ships in the 17th century.

1:00 The trailer shows Taverns as being a place that players can go to hire crew, get information about convoys to pirate, and of course, Rum. You’ll gain access to these Taverns by fighting whichever local bandits happen to be hanging around. The hand-to-hand combat seems to more realistic although still a little slow moving.

2:00 No Assassin’s Creed game would be complete without sync points, allowing you to reveal sections of the world map. The world is obviously gorgeous.

2:35 A diving bell is being shown. You will use the diving bell in-game to investigate underwater shipwrecks. With an open sea, geez there will be a ton of collectibles I’m sure.

3:05 Shows Edward Kenway being attacked by an eel as he searches a shipwreck underwater. Then the eel disappears, seems similar to the wolf attacks in AC3.

3:35 Kenway is still searching underwater when a shark starts to swim by. Stealth is still used underwater to hide from predators. I was hoping to see a shark attack, but not yet.

4:20 A Smuggler’s Cave is accessed from underwater. Not all can be accessed through underwater. Kenway knocks out the smugglers and loots their chests.

5:00 Moving deeper into the smugglers cave. The whistle technique is used to take out a smuggler.

6:00 Kenway is back aboard his ship. All this looting has attracted pirate hunters who are now heading towards Kenway to engage in an open sea battle. Not to mention how beautiful the sunset looks in the background.

6:10 Shots fired from the pirate hunter ship, then it rams Kenway’s ship. The narrator of the trailer notes it as a lvl 1. hunter. The hunter lvl system can reach lvl 4. At this point you’ll have a fleet of hunter ships hunting you in the open sea.

6:20 Kenway fires back. These ship battles look as amazing as ever. A horn is sounded from the other ship. Each ship that hunts you will have audio cues, so the player will know what kind of ship they’re engaging. Ramming ships will have horns. The most deadly ships, Man-O-Wars will have war drums.

6:50 The chain shot is used to bring down the masts of the enemy ship. Kenway ships pull ups next to the dead-in-the-water ship and starts a boarding. The swivel gun is used from the deck to kill the crew of the hunter ship.

7:20 Edward boards the ship. Uses his duel cutlasses to shred whats left of the hunter crew. We’re also told that there can be multiple objectives in order to finish boarding another ship.

7:40 Edward uses his four shots from his guns in succession as a combo, pretty sweet.

7:50 Plundering a ship allows you to add the ship to your fleet, repair the Jackdaw (Kenway’s ship), or reset your wanted level. The remaining hunter crew seems thankful for not being killed. Maybe they join Kenway afterwards.

8:00 Oh snap! Harpooning! So I guess if you loved hunting in AC3 you’ll get lost for hours now killing all of the fish and mammals of the sea. There are multiple upgrades you can only get from harpooning.

8:50 The shark that’s being harpooned is about to go Jaws on Kenway.

9:00 The shark is killed and pulled up from the sea as a bloody mess, PETA is gonna be pissed…
