A Story With A Message – Papo & Yo

Written by James Pope

Developed by Minority Games Papo and Yo is a platformer at its core, but underneath the color it is a wonderful story representing the tough times in the life of its lead developer. Vander Caballero the creative developer of the game drew upon his own experiences growing up in South America with his abusive alcoholic father. The messages are not so blunt they slap you right in the face but for anyone who has dealt with alcoholism within their family can see immediately where there correlation comes in.

Papo and Yo is a story of a young boy Quico and his best friend Monster, who is a huge beast with razor sharp teeth… the only problem there is that Monster has a problem. Monster is addicted to poisonous frogs and upon consuming them becomes enraged and uncontrollable leaving everything and everyone in his path is danger, including Quico. The world will reflect the mood of its characters in a way that sounds ominously close to the emotions of dealing with an alcoholic, when the pair is happy and playing the world is bright and vibrant with color and when Monster is on his rampage the world becomes dark and dreadful.

Players will be tasked with using Monsters abilities to take solve the worlds many challenges, even requiring at times the rage of Monster to break through different challenges that lie in the pairs path. In order to reach their ultimate goal, a cure for Monster the duo will need each other whether the enraged Monster realizes it or not…
