Valve Brings SteamOS To Your Living Room

Written by Kenny Rioux

In the first of three announcements that Valve is trotting out this week,”SteamOS’, a Linux based operating system was made public today, being touted as the answer to deliver Steam content to your home television. Valve,on their Steam website, declared that SteamOS, would “stream those games over your home network straight to your TV”This OS will also be free, and will still include the bevy of features that Steam has made public over recent weeks, including the family sharing program and the ability to stream movies and music over the OS.

This divulged information is interesting, not just because of what is announced, but also what it hints at for the future from Valve. Under the “In-Home Streaming” part of the release, the words,“You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too.” appear. This could very well all but confirm of a Steam only mini PC that has been probably the most persistent of worst-kept secrets of the past 18 months, this week just got very interesting. I, as a Steam user, am pretty excited about all of this, Steam has occupied more and more of my gaming time, and I have been wanting to get a gaming PC proper for a little while now. This very well could be the first of some ambitious plans for Valve, and Steam at large to immerse itself into the console market as a full on competitor. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo may just need to take notice, and it will be interesting to see how these companies react in the coming weeks and months.

Is this going to be the "SteamOS Machine" that Valve is hinting at?

Is this going to be the “SteamOS Machine” that Valve is referring to?

So what about yourself? Is the prospect of PC gaming in your living room entice you? And for those who don’t play PC games very often, does this pique your interest in terms of having a customization experience for your gaming intake?
