As we all wait with bated breath for the arrival of the third installment in the Kingdom Hearts series, Square Enix plants to satiate our thirst with… a browser game? Ok, so maybe they do not plan on actually using Kingdom Hearts X [chi] to hold us over until Kingdom Heats 3, but then why make it? Is the nostalgia in the Disney Worlds enough to drag gamers into what is essentially a Facebook game? Personally, I am sick of seeing Wonderland; I have explored it at least 4 times now and changing the art style is not going to bring me back in a strong way.
So what is Kingdom Hearts X [chi] besides a crazy name. Well it is a sidescrolling-esqe Kingdom Hearts game with the same art style as Theatrhythm. The combat is card based and you can level up your cards to make them more powerful. You can also fight bosses with other players, all of which are custom created, which seems like it could be cool. The card battle system is really the thing attracting me to the game though. Kingdom Hearts fans might remember Chain of Memories, which was my personal favorite of the series. Building my deck of all level 9 cards and spending hours to get them in the proper combinations to win nearly every fight is a very fond memory of mine. It is also the reason I broke the L and R buttons on two Gameboy Advance systems, but I digress.

That does lead me to my original point though; why? I like the idea of another Kingdom Hearts game, I like the idea of a card battles, I even like the idea of a chibi character. What I do not like is being pinned to my PC while doing all of that. Put the game on Vita or 3DS and I will spend hundreds of hours, in little snippets of time; tweaking, rearranging, and grinding my characters. But then, that would disrupt the “energy” trope the game seems to be based around.
The game also appears to be set before the infamous Keyblade Wars, and may even play a role in them. However, the forum rumblings seem resolute that this game will be non-canonical, although I can not find any hard source to back it up. If it is true, that could give you freedom to skip it if you wanted. So again, the question begs; why?
Should this game be tweaked and ported to other platforms? Would you play it is if was? Do you really want to trot through Agrabah again? Let us know in the comments.
If you wanted to sign up for the beta, you can do that here.
