This title is looking pretty spiffy thus far. Being an overhaul of a previously released game, (Painkiller, 2004) and a pretty good one at that, I have my doubts as to the necessity of such a project. The teaser trailer for Painkiller Hell & Damnation is beautiful, and the game itself will be utilizing the Unreal 3 engine. These things combined, while not speaking directly to quality, are a good start to transforming my skepticism into excitement. Let us know what...
Raven Poplar
Early Childhood Educator and video game journalist. First console game: California Games for Atari 2600. First PC game: Commander Keen on my IBM 286. I suppose I'm old!Hands On: Towns – A Good Mix of Genres
At first glance, this game doesn’t look much different from those click-and-collect, energy bar ridden, incredibly shallow -Ville games which permeate Facebook and have spawned dozens of even more gameplay-bereft clones. Yes, this game looks like FarmVille on the surface, but this indie town-building sim with RPG elements is well on its way to becoming a deep and complex game about settling in a lethally wild territory and clearing dungeons. Still in alpha, Towns is an...
Nintendo Power to Close For Good – No More Continues
If you are old enough to remember rummaging through issue after issue of classic gaming magazines such as Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro, then you remember what an invaluable source of information Nintendo Power was. Its pages offered ream upon ream of tips, secrets, maps, guides, and lots of advertising for the readership to salivate over. Long past are the glory days of these magazines. I haven’t personally bought a Nintendo Power in at least a decade, though...
The Steamfeed: Of Death and Dogs
This week has seen the release of some eagerly anticipated blockbuster games. I’m honestly not sure which game I want to get, Darksiders II or Sleeping Dogs. There are also lots of other games besides, and quite a few of them are strategy games. So let’s get into it. Hero Academy This cutesy tactical game has also been released on iOS and makes full use of its cross-platform status. This means that you can play this turn based game on Steam with iOS users and...
The Steamfeed – Now with Overexcited Trailer Spamming
It’s been a week of more awesome releases. With a couple of original puzzlers, a new MMORPG IP, an old F2P Steam release, and a good amount of high-quality miscellany, this weekend is the perfect time to burn some credits. Cannon Fodder 3 This isometric “dual stick” (on PC I guess that would be WASD movement and mouse targeting) tactical shooter looks like a blast. Run around enemy encampments, collect weaponry, and blow holes in the heads of your foes...
5 New (and Old) Games Added to the GOG.com Library
The once old-school only turned new-and-old distribution platform, GOG.com, has a couple of new indie titles for us as well as a few additions of older games to their repertoire. It seems that since the website changed their policy on what they would be releasing, their library has grown manifold with new titles coming in at a steady rate. All their games remain DRM-Free, as well, so all of your purchases can be downloaded, stored, and installed on any and every computer...
Cheetahmen II – The Lost Levels: Recoded, Repackaged, Repulsive
That’s right, the wildly successful cult phenomenon known as The Cheetahmen are back and they’re being rereleased on… NES? Wait, who are these clowns? If you don’t know who they are, here’s a little brief. The Cheetahmen are a group of genetically mutated “sub-humans” named Aries, Apollo, and Hercules. They are misunderstood by many and also fighters of injustice wherever they see it. That probably sounds a lot like most cartoons...
The Steamfeed: So many games!
Getting over the Steam Summer Sale drought of new games has taken a week longer than I had anticipated, but we have finally gotten all the games which were apparently held back during the sale. There seem to be some very promising titles, so let’s get right into it. Wanderlust: Rebirth With obvious inspiration taken from Link to the Past, this multiplayer RPG looks very promising. We’ve got a review forthcoming, so stay locked. Wanderlust: Rebirth is an online...
F2P FPS Bullet Run Available for Download
Sony Online Entertainment has been busy working with gamers on the BETA of the newest Free to Play First-Person Shooter, Bullet Run. The wait for release is over, and you can now download and play Bullet Run for free. This game seems to propagate an interesting take on the near-future gameshow style which has been done so many times before. Smash T.V., Fatal Rewind, and Monday Night Combat have all tried the same kind of setting and have invariably met with great success...
The Steamfeed: Less is More During the Steam Summer Sale
So you, as a savvy reader, may have noticed that last week’s Steamfeed feature was missing. Don’t fret, we haven’t cancelled it, it’s just that during the week-long Summer Sale they, the glorious masters of the leading digital distribution platform, had no new releases. I assume they were devoting more resources to moving copies of Steam’s existing library rather than putting new things out in that mayhem, but that’s just conjecture. This...
