RE4. Great story and great mix of action. Really changed the formula for future RE games.
Resident Evil 2 is my favorite all time. It was the first game that actually terrified me.
Resident Evil 2. The branching storyline with Leon and Claire. The G-Virus and the tyrant. I think it was the best and I wish they remade it.
Resident Evil 5 was my favorite RE game because it brought Chris and Jill back into the action.

Resident Evil 4. Less creepy than previous ones, but more ACTION!
My first Resident Evil game was RE4 and I was HOOKED! It started by playing the demo and definitely caught my eye. Afterwards, slowly started completing my collection with Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 all the way to RE5. Now waiting for RE6 :D So, to answer your question, Resident Evil 4 has been my favorite :)
