Tips on How to Play South Park: The Stick of Truth

Written by Austin Griffith

South Park: The Stick of Truth is now available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC everywhere. While we’re sure you’ll be picking it up sometime soon, there are a few things you’re going to want to do before you get your hands dirty to maximize your enjoyment. If you’re still on the fence about it, be sure to read our review: South Park: The Stick of Truth – Dungeons and Douchebags.

Change the Difficulty

South Park: The Stick of Truth, while hilariously funny and a great game to play, suffers from being incredibly easy to win at. Throughout my 20 hour playthrough, I reached max rank and began to absolutely abhor getting in to side battles, because all they became was short two minute fights that I had no worry of losing. This is South Park: The Stick of Truth’s biggest flaw: it’s just too easy! So, to remedy this, open up your game settings and set the difficulty to Hardcore. While a few of the side quests will give you trouble, you’ll get much more out of the game.

Talk to everyone you see. Everyone.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a game dominated by modern day criticisms (as it should be) so it comes as no surprise that one way you level up your character is by gaining Facebook friends. To do this, most of the time, all you have to do is talk to the person! While many of the recognizable characters will require you to perform a quest or task for them to be friends, many of the unnamed kids roaming the streets will immediately add you.

Roam around. Take your time.

The Stick of Truth is not the longest RPG in the books. After a near 100% playthrough, I’d amassed approximately 20 hours of gameplay time. My advice for you is this: take your time, explore the city, meet some friends, and do the sidequests – there is absolutely no need to rush through the main story.

Get lost? Just wait.

South Park has its own version of Zelda’s Lost Woods, except these woods really do trap you. Make one wrong turn and you’ll be wondering for hours – unless wolf hounds find you and kill you. The only way to escape these woods is to find the way out, which is near impossible, or to just wait. That’s right, wait. Find an area with no enemies and set the controller down for a few minutes. Once both you and your companion are playing on your phones, head to the next section, if you waited long enough, your parents will be waiting to take you home. Pro tip: save before entering the woods. This way you can reload the file if you do in fact get completely lost.

Visit Tom’s Rhinoplasty. Pay for The Hoff.

Tom’s Rhinoplasty offers nosejobs for your character. Save up the $175.00 needed to get “The Hoff” and do it. You can thank me later. Just trust me on this one.

That’ll do it for you, folks. Now that you know how to properly play South Park: The Stick of Truth, get out there and become cool!
