Preview: Black Knight Sword

Written by Chris Lock

Black Sword Knight is, for lack of a better term, bizarre. That is not surprising considering it is coming from the mind of Suda 51 and Grasshopper Manufacturer, known for their wacky games. You play as a man who is possessed by the Black Knight Sword and is on a quest to kill the evil princess. All along the way you kill other creepy baddies and retrieve hearts from microwaves, not exactly the prettiest of fairy tale stories.

The art style however is very pretty, in a vaguely disturbing and scary way. Imagine if a deranged artist from the 1500’s decided to put on a puppet show. That is pretty close to what this game looks like. The monsters are deformed human-esque creatures and bleed profusely when stabbed. It definitely is a unique aesthetic and makes the game stand out in a way that might be hard to forget, even if you wanted to.

Black Knight Sword has been said to play like old school games such as Ghost and Goblins. Whether it is actually as balls hard as a game like that remains to be seen. From what you see in the videos below the game seems tight and response. If this game is to be as hard as ye olden games those controls need to be on the nose or this game is doomed to obscurity.

The game is slated for a “Summer” release on XBLA and SEN. We will have more information as we get it but until then enjoy these screen shots and videos. Also tell us what you think. Will you be getting this game? What do you think of the art style? Why is there a walking head? Let us know in the comments.

  • Looks almost identical to those weird side-scroller levels in Shadows of the Damned, which to be honest were one of my least favourite parts of the game. I find that that art style has kind of a half-finished look too. Hopefully they can polish it up into something awesome though…
